Hardwood floors are a beautiful addition to any home or office, and they’re a great choice for increasing the value of your property! However, these gorgeous floors are not immune from the daily wear and tear of life, and you might find that your hardwood floors can become worn over time.
How to Refinish Hardwoods
This project is not a quick fix, so be prepared to set aside enough time to properly restore your hardwood floors. You’ll need to remove the baseboards and shoe base moulding (the little piece of rounded moulding that covers where the floor meets the wall) before you get started. You’ll also want to check the spaces between planks and hammer in any nail heads. If the planks have widening gaps, your refinishing project just turned into a hardwood flooring replacement project. Solid hardwood floors should be at least three-quarters of an inch thick; if your floors are thinner than this, they are engineered hardwood floors and should only be refinished by a professional like us.
If you’re going to go the DIY route, you’ll need a sander that’s made for refinishing hardwoods, along with the correct grades of sandpaper. A handheld sander or belt sander will work great, or you can also rent an orbital sander. Be sure to pick up plastic sheeting to cover vents, light fixtures, doorways, and other spaces.

Or sandwoman. Once you have supplies, it’s time to start sanding! Use the heaviest grit sandpaper you have for the project and move evenly across the floor in a straight line, working your way down the room. Vacuum up the dust when you’re finished and fill holes with wood filler.
Now it’s time for step two. Use the medium grit sandpaper and repeat the process, and then do the same with the fine grit sandpaper for step three.
Staining and Sealing
Staining your floors is only required if you would like a different color in your home. If not, you can seal the floors following the instructions on the sealant and then finish your project with a coat of polyurethane.
