Interested in new carpet for your home? Not sure what kind of carpet will hold up best to kids, spills, and “accidents” from that not-yet-housebroken puppy? Read on, and Flooring By Design will discuss the best kinds of carpet for kids and pets.
- Go With Polyester Or Nylon
Polyester (often known as PET) and nylon are both synthetic fibers that are naturally stain-resistant and easy to clean. They do not absorb odors or stains readily, and just about any stain can be removed with a standard steam cleaner.
- Avoid Carpets That Are Too Thick, Or Have A High Pile
Thick, plush carpets are comfy, but tend to collect crumbs, dirt, pet hair, and nasty smells. For areas where kids and pets will be playing, go with a carpet that’s less than a half-inch thick.
- Buy A Strong, Durable Pad
Don’t spend too much on padding, but get at least a 1/8-1/4 inch Rebond type pad with a 6 lb. density. This padding is inexpensive, but durable and soft enough for kids and pets to play comfortably.
- Choose A Dark Or Multi-Textured Color
White carpets look nice when they’re clean — but if you have kids and pets, they won’t be clean. At least, not for long.
Look for earth-toned carpets with a variety of colors and textures. These carpets can absorb stains and spills easily, and still look great even if the stain can’t be completely removed.
- Invest In Scotchgard-Treated Carpet
You may want to consider buying a carpet that’s been factory-treated with Scotchgard, or a similar product. Scotchgard carpet resists stains, spills, and dirt for as long as it’s installed – so even if your kids spill food on your carpet, or your new puppy has an “accident”, you can simply clean it with standard household cleaning products, and restore it to a brand-new state.
